Sculpture News: Vanessa Pooley, Issue #012 - Know Sculptures Of Cyclists? September 24, 2009 |
| Hello, Here's the latest news: I didn't get shortlisted for the Artists Take the Lead project. But thanks to those of you who made encouraging noises. You can all say 'BOO' now! Actually I rarely put in for competitions, such is my dislike of paperwork and of being turned down... My mother-in-law, who is also a sculptor and still going strong at nearly 80, just called me to remind me to put in for The Discerning Eye show which takes place in the autumn at the Mall Galleries in London. I won a decent prize there a few years ago in the same show but that doesn't mean I'll be accepted this time. I wasn't going to apply, see above, but I could not think of enough reasons to say 'no'. Submitted work is picked up locally and the fees are not exorbitant. So will let you know if I am showing there in November... In July I was asked permission for inclusion of one of my sculptures in a film being shot in South London - London Boulevard. The film comes out next spring, it stars Keira Knightley. I don't expect the sculpture will have a starring role but if you get to see the film look out for the life-size ceramic of mine.... My lovely niece, Emma Pooley, continues to inspire with her cycling achievements since her silver medal at Bejing. She has won numerous races and titles since going professional after the olympics. I'd like to do a sculpture inspired by her. Actually I think it might be of her cycling but minus bike... This new departure ticks several boxes for me, (my evangelical feelings about cycling, pride in her achievements) and also represents a move towards sculptures with an 'eco' angle. Maybe this sculpture needs to be small in case a gold plated one is wanted for London 2012? Have you seen any pleasing sculptures of cyclists? Please let me know or send me images which might inspire. As I was saying, I would like to do work more strongly related to climate change issues but haven't yet found the imagery I need. Although I am pleased with a new sculpture which is a figure with a strange tree shape. Figure supporting tree - tree sheltering person. If possible, I'd like the 'eco' sculptures to embody a positive message. Those of you in London - I'll have work again with Fine Art Consultancy at the Affordable Art Fair.
