Sculpture News: Vanessa Pooley, Issue #008 - New work at the Bergh Apton Sculpture Trail May 09, 2008 |
| Hello, I have been looking forward to "Balance", the Bergh Apton Sculpture Trail of 2008 for three years - since the last one. Described as 'internationally renowned', the Trail (24/25 May, 31 May/1 June and 7/8 July 2008) will be spread across 12 private gardens in Bergh Apton, a small but somewhat sprawling village in rural Norfolk. This year, responding to the implications of climate change, no transport will be provided between gardens and visitors will tour the village by foot or on bicycle, searching out the spots the artists have selected as most suitable to site their work. All profits from the event go to charity. 61 artists are showing their sculptures and there will also be stone sculptures from Zimbabwe made by Shona sculptors. This time I am showing in Garden 6 - near the Village Hall where delicious refreshments are served. I am having a larger bronze sculpture cast just in time for the Bergh Apton Sculpture Trail. This new work was stimulated by a request from a client in London who loved the bronze sculpture Flying Lessons that I finished last year (and which has been shortlisted for this year's Royal Academy Summer Exhibition - fingers crossed!) - but wanted to site it outdoors. The original Flying Lessons is really an indoor piece size-wise so I have made a larger version of it. There are many differences from the smaller sculpture but the theme of balance and fun and the general shape are the same. Hopefully the casting process will continue to go smoothly and the first of the edition will be ready in time for the opening of the Trail. In my designated garden I plan to transform a birdbath already in situ into a handy base by putting a flat wooden top over it. Placed on top of this the sculpture should then be about the right height...but I will need to go along to set up the work with an open mind, since siting a sculpture is rarely straightforward. The new work does not yet have a name, but I am wondering about calling it 'Balance ' since, like Flying Lessons, it is about two figures balancing.
