Bronze sculpture of a child in its mother's arms - Flying Lessons
Flying Lessons/12" long/£3450 L: 30 cm
We have chosen a watery bluey/purpley coloured patina for this bronze sculpture of a child supported on its mother's legs. This colour works well and this piece really has developed to be as optimistic as I had hoped, with the upward movement of the forms contributing to the positive emotion. This bronze started life with the name 21st Century Mum - the title of the article in the Observer Magazine, the illustration for which gave me the idea last year. I've changed the name now to 'Flying Lessons'. Last year, after seeing the image on the cover of the magazine I wrote to The Observer telling them how it had inspired me. My card was passed on to the mother pictured with her daughter in the photograph. She has been in touch and is looking forward to seeing the finished bronze sculpture of the piece she inadvertently inspired. I think she'll like it! I'm delighted with this sculpture now it is cast into metal. so much so, it has inspired me to start a series of bronze sculptures with the child flying, riding or playing on the mother. In 2008 I went on to make a larger version of this piece, called Balance. The child figure in this sculpture must be aged about 6 or 8. I have really enjoyed creating this bronze sculpture of a child who is having such fun, and I wonder where my Mother and Child series is headed next. As my own children grow older - my eldest child is now taller than me - so my work evolves, reflecting the ever-changing experience of motherhood in my own life. Go to top of Flying Lessons.
