New Contemporary Sculptures In 2010
Here are new contemporary sculptures I completed in 2010, plus some information about work in progress. Whisper in the TreesTwo Kneeling Female Figures Hugging. Cast in silver plated bronze.
This new bronze sculpture of two women hugging is silver plated. Silver seems to suit these sensuous forms. I had fun doing this one. Some people have said it is heart shaped. The aim was to keep the overall shape simple, with the outside shape versus the inside space with the whole forming a triangle. My Mother really likes this sculpture, and likes what I have done (or not) with the arms. She spotted the oddity there and she finds terribly amusing. This is the beginning of a new series. I see this sculpture as a celebration of female friendship. H x W x D: 25x21x11 cm Shut your EyesLone Seated Female Figure. Cast in silver plated bronze.
My son played the song 'Shut Your Eyes and Think of Me', by Snow Patrol all the time when I was making this. It's plaintively beautiful. No real narrative but ringingly perfect. I wanted to do a small quiet sculpture to sit on a desk.I find I keep going back to the theme of the solitary thoughtful figure. Some people like these best and I have been touched to hear about the positive emotions they seem to evoke. This bronze contemporary sculpture is similar to 'Staryu which I made a while ago but this is silver plated. I don't know what to say about these except I love making them and am surprised and delighted by the responses I have had to these quiet figures. H x W x D: 17x9x14 cm

Work in Progress - Silver CuddlesI enjoyed making Our World so much I've begun a series on the theme. Having fun playing with the way the figure in that pose can be re positioned. Inverted it balances on one leg and it takes on a different meaning. Similarly it can be laid on its 'front - effectively doing the splits. A friend looked after "Our World' for me recently, having collected it for me at the end of an exhibition. She told me how much she liked the way it could be positioned in different ways. When working on small sculptures towards the end of the process they can be picked up, turned over and around and worked on from all angles. It's my favourite stage in developing a sculpture because its very easy to pull the work together. I'd like my contemporary sculptures to be played with like this more, but its not always possible. Clinging FiguresNot long ago a friend came to the studio to have a go at making a clay sculpture. She wanted to do a sculpture of mother hugging a child but was not happy with the results so she abandoned her little figures. I took them up and found them a very useful starting point. They were rather loose and floppy so I sort of squished them closer together. These little figures take more time to make, perhaps because every tiny mark can make such a big diffrence?. This is one of my smallest sculptures and I have decided to have it cast and silver plated in time for Christmas 2010.
