Why Emma Thompson bought Hug...
I was delighted when a gallery sold the sculpture Hug to the actress Emma Thompson. As a
rule galleries do not tell artists very much about who has bought
their work, so I appreciate it when I hear news of where a piece
has gone.
I sent a card to Emma Thompson, thanking her for buying the piece. I imagined that she had
bought it for her home, but I then discovered that she supports the
Helen Bamber Foundation,
an organisation that cares for survivors of gross human rights violations.
I was touched to receive this reply from Emma:
| Dear Vanessa
Thank you so very much for your postcards! I love my statue and wanted lots of them. Perhaps one day I'll get another. They're so beautiful. It stands in our office, where many refugees and asylum-seekers come for help and solace. I wanted them to have something to hold and touch that signified love. So there you are.
Thank you again and lots of love from Emma T

I am touched - and very glad - that she thinks that my work can offer some comfort to people in such distress.
