Large Bronze Sculptures Gallery

Here I am in my studio, working on a sculpture
Creating large bronze sculptures is terribly exciting. I often imagine how some of my smaller pieces would look if I made huge versions - a big scale suits my subject matter and forms. I can imagine people walking underneath my Mother and Child sculpture or sitting on the lap of 'Flip'.

Bigger sculptures need more development time and take more studio space.

Making them is a physically tiring process too; clay is heavy. And when it comes to casting a large bronze sculpture, the foundry cost goes up according to the scale. A sculpture the size of Big PB - below - would be cut in half at the wax stage and carefully welded together again at the bronze stage.

Large public sculptures may be constructed out of many, many sections. It’s difficult to say why the size matters, but like many of my artist friends occasionally I long to have the opportunity to make really large bronze sculptures.

Large Bronze Sculptures: Big PB

This bold piece is the largest bronze sculpture I have at the moment - it's larger than life size. Its hair has a heavy, watery feel, and it looks as though it's been beneath the sea for a long while. I'd love to see it near water, perhaps reflected in it. The name derives from a charming gallery owner who was the first person to show this sculpture.

Probably my most 'naturalistic' female figure, Morning is about the size of a small woman. It's slinky and smooth, and people like the unusual patina, which differs from my other large bronze sculptures. It breaks up the surface and makes it look ancient, as though it's covered in patches of lichen. With a different patination this would take on quite another look.

Large Bronze Sculptures: The Voice

This piece has a dignified and silent quality. As to the title - I like to think she is listening intently to an inner voice. Many people have commented on her ambiguous and serene mood. This piece can easily be displayed indoors or outside.

You can see my large, uncast sculptures here.

One of my favourite large pieces, After Botero is here.

This piece, called Balance is my largest Mother & Child Sculpture.
