Positioning a Large Outdoor Sculpture

| | What Owners Say | | | "Big PB has crawled up on her big rock and made herself comfortable! We are more than pleased with her and her installation. She is a wonderful addition to our courtyard."

| You might think that a large outdoor sculpture could be positioned happily in a huge space, but even the largest, like Big PB, needs some containment and can look small and lost if not well placed. A marvellous soution to this is when lines occur naturally on the ground, as with Big PB here. There is a lot of 'space' around this sculpture but the area the bronze inhabits is defined by the lines of the lawn, so that it maintains a real presence. I love the way it looks here with the river in the background. Its simple temporary wooden base, adds a helpful, unobtrusive border to the composition. When this large outdoor sculpture is finally fixed down it will be positioned on a very low brick or stone plinth of similar dimensions in the base it has in now.
It can be hard to find the best position for a garden sculpture, and trial and error coupled with an open mind - "let's just try it there" - helps. There is nothing like moving a sculpture around to find the best place for it. I like to position a sculpture then stand well back for a moment to take in the new position. When the piece suddenly looks fantastic, and takes on a real presence, then that position is the right place for it! Back to top of Positioning a large outdoor sculpture
