Mother and Child Sculptures Gallery

Here I am working on mother and child sculptures

Three years ago, I began the first of my mother and child sculptures (used in my logo, above right – this edition is now sold out). Called simply Mother and Child, the mother is on her haunches and leaning forward to hug the small child, and the affection between the two figures is obvious. The child leans in towards the mother and the mother is reaching as far as she can to embrace her child. They are balancing each other.

Becoming a mother has been a huge inspiration.

Rough and tumble seems to be one of the joys of having boys, and every now and again my two boys still like to jump on my back together, although one of them is very nearly my height so I don't know how long this will go on for. Continuing the Mother and Child theme, I wondered how many children I could fit on the mother's back at one time.

This sculpture has a peaceful air, and the mother seems very gentle.I wondered about calling it "Madonna and Child", but that felt toospecific, although of all my mother and child sculptures, it does have a strangely spiritual air. This piece is much morevertical than most of my current work. It also has an unusual patina, but now that I've seen it in this warm colour it's hard to imagine it in any other.

Little did I know at the start how much I would enjoy this new series of mother and child sculptures, in which I celebrate the sweetest aspects of family life, especially the fun and love of every day.
Blissey shows a kneeling hug. I like the triangular shape which lends a feeling of quiet strength.

Snubble

I think this one is funny! Aged 9 and 11, my children still love to clamber on my back and muck about. Clinging on like monkeys they’re not bothered by being upside down, as they compete for space in the nicest way.

Hug

I wanted to do a very simple sculpture of an affectionate hug between a parent and a child. This is a quiet piece. The warm tones of this patina complement the peacefulness of the sculpture.

Flip

SOLD OUT

This is one of my recent mother and child sculptures. I wanted a different sort of hug, to capture that changing level of dependency. The two figures are together yet becoming more independent - this child is growing up. I started to call it Flip because of the way the hair flips up at the back.

Nose-Kiss

This is the latest in the series of mother and child sculptures. When I had nearly finished I still had not added any arms. I held my breath and decided to leave them off because they would be superfluous and hide the gentle relationship between the two figures. There has been a very warm reaction to this sculpture.

There's also a version cast in iron. Click here to find out more.

Large Mother and Child

This is the largest available in the series of Mother and Child sculptures. I wanted to explore what happened if the woman’s bottom was at rest on her calves. I wanted to combine the 'kneeling thing' with the 'leaning thing'! Also the serrations in the hair set off the roundedness of the larger forms. One of the people who has this sculpture is blind and she enjoys stroking it and feeling its different textures.

Small Mother and Child

I've tried to capture the universal experience of being a parent in this series of mother and child sculptures. Here, the mother's hair just got longer and longer till it reached all the way down her back. This sculpture has a very soft, friendly feel, and a tactile quality.

This has the intimate quality I tried to capture in the larger, original mother and child. I made this one really small, to keep the bronze casting costs down as much as I can. One client bought one of these for each of her three daughters! This tiny piece can either be bronze, or silver-plated. Click here to see a larger image of Tiny Mother and Child.

Octopus Mummy

Speaking as a twin I wanted to experiment with making a mother hug two small children at once. I like the way the hair has become actively involved in the hug - echoing the mother's embrace. It's become stylised and its sharpness offsets the softer shapes.
