Original Bronze Sculpture
New work in development, 2007Multi-Baby H: 30, W 15, D 20 cm
My newest piece is a bit odd. It began with a kneeling woman but I am now covering her in little children who are clambering all over her, as if they are all trying to reach the top. It looks a bit silly at this stage. But I have to keep working on it to see if it can work. There is no idea behind it apart from playing with the idea of how many children can be fitted climbing up her. In the meantime I've changed the name of this piece to Multi-Mummy. I liked the sculpture I made called Flying Lessons so much, I have begun a new one on the same theme. This time it seems to be turning into even more of a 'flying lesson' with the child lifted into the air by the Mummy's feet, its hands stretched out forward and the mother's hair flicking up rather than anchoring downwards. So far it's going quickly and very well. Doing a second version of something sometimes makes for a more fluid, less anxious result - although at other times it feels too repetitious and misses the point.
New work cast in 2006Over the summer of 2006 I finished working on three new pieces of original bronze sculpture, and had them fired, so they were stable. I generally like to mull over finished work to decide which are the best ones to cast into bronze. These ceramic sculptures felt complete and compact, so I sent them to the foundry, where moulds were taken from them. The foundry cast these bronzes and so the ceramics, illustrated below, were returned to me. The cast pieces are now finished, and you can see pictures of them by clicking on the link with each picture, below.
Nutcracker Evolved/10" high H: 25, W: 15 cm This idea emerged from Nutcracker Inspiration sculpture I made earlier in 2006. Nutcracker Evolved takes the idea further. Bundle (Mother with Four Offspring)/9" high H: 24, W: 24 cm
This piece, Bundle, is part of the ongoing Mother and Child series. I'm having fun playing in the studio, piling clay children on to a mother's back. Should they be lined up neatly waiting for 'horsey' to 'walk on', or should they be anarchically clinging on? Sleeping Starfish figure/5" long L: 12, W: 17 cm
A new tiny sculpture, Sleeping Starfish comes with a silver-plated finish. Back to the top of original bronze sculpture
