Reclining Nude Sculptures Gallery

Here I am in my studio, working on a sculpture
These reclining nude sculptures of the female form take on a wholly different set of characteristics: they are alone; stretching, languishing, brooding or resting, thinking of loved ones or imagining a tranquil place all for themselves.

Many people who collect my work have been struck by the sense that these female figures are happy to be with themselves, by themselves. Their thoughts are their own and we can only guess as to what they might be.

In this modern day life where stillness seems to be at a premium, these reclining nude sculptures give the impression of contentment and an inner space.

Butterfly
Butterfly/23" long//£4900
L: 57, H: 27, W: 22 cm

Butterfly took ages to develop, having been sat up and turned over repeatedly at the clay stage. The last big change was to bring the upper leg into a new upright position, and suddenly the sculpture was nearly finished. I call it Butterfly because of the thick wing of hair below the head.

Little Voice

Unlike its big sister, 'The Voice', this sculpture has flowing hair and reminds me most of a cat curled up somewhere comfy and secluded. Quiet and simple, this would look comfortable at many different surface heights - just as a cat does.

Round Face
Round Face/£3450
L: 37, H: 33, W: 15 cm

The roundness of the face was inspired by an amazingly beautiful woman I know. It was only when I sculpted her portrait and took measurements that I realised that her face really was as wide as it was high. I'd never thought that in real life a round face would be so attractive. I have since gone on to use this style of face in other sculptures such as 'Minipuff2' below. A larger version of this piece would work well because of the simplicity of these shapes.

Iggilybuff
Iggilybuff/16" long/£3650
L: 40, H: 20, W: 20 cm

Perhaps not really a reclining nude sculpture, Iggilybuff is about leaping for joy, and stretching, and curling over - all at once. There are downward movements but they cannot suppress the optimism of this sculpture. It has tiny fingers and toes, which show off the larger, more generous body curves.

Smile

This figure is reclining, but not in the classic way - she is almost sitting and seems to be returning the gaze. It's 'Smile 'because, unusually, there is one!

Minipuff

I began this with a determination to make lots of 'upward movements' - but now that it's finished, I note it's only the hair that's moving upwards! Even so, this piece reflects the optimism of my work, and people certainly see it as a celebration of life.
