Sculpture collecting

There are so many different attitudes and approaches to sculpture collecting. It's impossible to predict who'll become a collector.

Over the years, I've got to know lots of very different people through my work and the collectors are the most surprising. Some must have a new piece regularly, while others urgently want a "bargain". Most often, a collector simply falls for a piece and have to have it - it's a yearning, not particularly rational - they just passionately want a sculpture!

The first move into fine art sculpture collecting seems to be the hardest. Subsequently it becomes easier, because the collector knows how owning the work will make them feel, and can imagine how it will sit in their house or garden.

What collectors say
Jiggilypuff "We both fell in love with Jiggilypuff the first time we saw her. She made us smile. She now reclines, on our sitting room hearth, with her feet to the fire, toasting her toes, a contented expression on her face". J&M

"Laura and I have collected Vanessa's work for over 20 years. The magic lies in the texture and the energy of her figures. Vanessa's women are comfortable in their bodies and they relish stretching, flexing and exploring the space around them". David

Minipuff on her windowsill"I first saw Vanessa's work in a local gallery and loved it - but couldn't afford to buy. A year or two later, I came into a sum of money, and decided that instead of spending on something sensible-but-dull, I would grab the opportunity to buy myself a sculpture.
"I visited Vanessa's magical studio and was overwhelmed by the range of her work. Choosing was impossible and I ended up going home with not one, but two pieces - and that's how I became a collector!
"Minipuff always makes me smile, and is just the right size to live on the kitchen windowsill, but both pieces give great pleasure every single day, and I've never regretted my decision to buy two. I want sculpture collecting to be a part of my life from now on." EF
