Small Bronze Sculptures Gallery

Here I am in my studio, working on a sculpture
Working on tiny sculptures is great fun. And small bronze sculptures cost a lot less to cast. In the early development stages I can react rapidly to fresh ideas - quickly pushing or squeezing the clay into new shapes.

So, if I want to cut a sculpture up and reassemble the parts it only takes a moment. In the clay the really tiny sculptures are very fragile and fiddly, but once cast these miniature bronzes become robust.

Making these small bronze sculptures gives me an opportunity to live with a new theme and get reactions from other people before possibly going on to enlarge them. In this way they can be like maquettes – small-scale studies made in preparation for a larger work.

At home I love having these small bronze sculptures on the mantelpiece, as they can then occupy a special place in the room where everyone can see them close up.

I wanted to do a small, quiet contemplative piece with the same sort of feeling as the much bigger Jiggilypuff that I made several years ago. People have been so positive about the atmosphere of the Jiggilypuff sculpture and I wanted to recreate that same calmness. So when a close friend described to me the qualities of tranquillity and happiness that she finds in my work - she already owns Jiggilypuff and Minipuff - I decided to draw them all together and make a small sculpture of a reclining woman as a gift to her. This little sculpture now sits serenely on her windowsill keeping her company as she works.

Here, I am once again trying to work as small as I feasibly can. This is a hand-held sculpture, almost like a paperweight. This one feels like the start of a new series.

Last One
Last One/9" high/£1450
H: 23 cm

A very contemplative sculpture, about quietness and resolution. The patination complements the mood of the piece with a stony natural feel. Small enough to sit on a desk or fit into a narrow space.

Diddy
Diddy/8.5" high/£1300
H: 21.5 cm

A collector asked the other day if this was a pregnant sculpture. I said no, none of mine are, but I can see that there is quite a sweet little tummy there, perhaps a small pregnancy? Anyway, she bought it to remind her of her last pregnancy...

Tiny Mother and Child, silver-plated

L: 11, H: 10, W: 6 cm

This has the intimate quality I tried to capture in the larger, original mother and child. I made this one really small, to keep the bronze casting costs down as much as I can. One client bought one of these for each of her three daughters! This tiny piece can either be bronze, or silver-plated. Click to see a larger image of Tiny Mother and Child.
